We love this tree

S.A. No. 702 Velvet Wild-medlar (Wildemispel)
Zimb. No. 1096 Wild-medlar
This tree can be found in Bushveld, open woodland, grassland, among rocks and in coastal scrub.
The fruit is almost round, 2.5 – 3.5 cm in diameter and is a glossy dark green when young and changing to light brown when it ripens from January to April. The ripe fruit is soft and fleshy with a leathery skin. The fruit is usually borne singly or in pairs on twigs below the leaves. It is edible and has a pleasant sweet-sour, mealy taste, like an apple. The dry fruit is leathery and grooved like a pumpkin.
The similarity between this species and Vangueriopsis lanciflora is discussed under the latter. The specific name of this tree means ‘unlucky’, and many people, believing that it possesses evil powers, will not use the wood, even as fuel. Nevertheless, the roots are regarded as a remedy for a number of complaints, including malaria and pneumonia. The pulp of the fruit, when mixed with a little sugar and water, makes a good substitute for apple sauce and it has been used in puddings.
